Things to Do in Mt. Pleasant, TN: Phosphate History and the Square
The phosphate story. High-grade brown phosphate rock was discovered at Mount Pleasant in the late 1800s, and the mining industry it launched lasted more than a hundred years, according to the Tennessee Encyclopedia. Mobil Chemical, which had bought the Virginia-Carolina plant in Mt. Pleasant, shut down its phosphorus furnace there in 1971.

Historic places. Walnut Grove, an 1858 Greek Revival house at 510 North Main Street, and the Breckenridge Hatter’s Shop, dating to 1819, are both on the National Register.
