Columbia, TN Zip Codes: 38401 and 38402 Explained

Custom Image

Quick answer (as of October 2026) Columbia, Tennessee has two ZIP codes. 38401 delivers to street addresses across the city, and 38402 is for PO Boxes only. The Postal Service lists no other ZIP for Columbia. On the 2020 Census map, about 96 percent of 38401's land is in Maury County, and only about 11 percent of it is inside Columbia city limits. The ZIP doesn't follow the city line either way: Marlon's Creek and Quail Run Meadows sit inside Columbia city limits with Spring Hill 37174 mailing addresses.

You looked up a ZIP code to figure out where a house is. In Columbia, the ZIP tells you where the mail goes and not much more. It won't tell you whether the house is inside city limits, what the tax bill looks like, or which school it's zoned for.

I own a renovated historic home near the square in Columbia, and on every Maury County house I look at, I check the city limits, the county and the school zone by the exact address. If you'd rather I check one for you, DM me, text or call 615-392-1186.

What is the zip code for Columbia, TN?

Columbia, Tennessee's ZIP code is 38401. The U.S. Postal Service lists two ZIPs for Columbia, TN, as of October 2026: 38401, a standard ZIP that delivers to street addresses, and 38402, a PO Box ZIP. USPS lists no other city name for either one.

There are Columbias in several other states, so a search for "columbia zip code" can land anywhere. This page is about Columbia, Tennessee, the county seat of Maury County.

Is 38402 a PO Box zip code?

Yes. The Postal Service lists 38402 as a PO Box ZIP for Columbia, TN, so it's for mail picked up at a post office box, not for a home's street address. A house in Columbia uses 38401, or 37174 on the Spring Hill side covered below.

The Census Bureau's 2020 ZIP map has no area at all for 38402, which is what you'd expect for a ZIP that only serves PO Boxes.

How big is the 38401 zip code?

38401 covers about 297 square miles of land and had 63,075 residents in the 2020 Census. The City of Columbia, which sits inside it, covered about 33 square miles and had 41,690 residents.

Area USPS type Land area (2020) Population (2020) Housing units (2020)
ZIP 38401 Standard, city name Columbia About 297 sq mi 63,075 26,977
ZIP 38402 PO Box only, city name Columbia None (PO Boxes) Not counted Not counted
City of Columbia Not a ZIP About 33 sq mi 41,690 18,335

The Census figures are for the Census Bureau's ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, its map of each ZIP, from the 2020 Census. They track the Postal Service's ZIPs closely, not perfectly, so treat the shares on this page as rough.

What county is 38401 in?

38401 is a Maury County ZIP. On the Census Bureau's 2020 ZIP map, about 96 percent of 38401's land, roughly 285 square miles, is in Maury County. The map also puts small edges of it in Williamson County, about 6 square miles, and Marshall County, about 5.

The Postal Service doesn't publish ZIP boundaries, so those edges come from the Census map only. The 38401 addresses on this page all sit in Maury County. My guide to what county Spring Hill, TN is in covers the Williamson and Maury line to the north.

Is a Columbia 38401 address always inside Columbia city limits?

No. On the 2020 Census map, only about 11 percent of 38401's land, roughly 33 of its 297 square miles, is inside Columbia city limits. About 87 percent is outside any city, in unincorporated Maury County, and about 4 square miles fall inside Mount Pleasant's city limits.

38401 had 63,075 residents in 2020 and the City of Columbia had 41,690, so about a third of the people with a 38401 ZIP lived outside the city.

One example, as of October 2026: the Silver Springs subdivision on Model Court has a Columbia, TN 38401 address. The Census geocoder puts 101 Model Ct. in Maury County with no city, and the state's property record for the street lists no city either.

Can a Spring Hill address be inside Columbia city limits?

Yes. Some neighborhoods inside Columbia city limits get their mail through Spring Hill, ZIP 37174. Two examples, per the Census geocoder as of October 2026:

  • Marlon's Creek, at 1686 Lasea Rd., has a Spring Hill 37174 address and sits inside the City of Columbia, in Maury County. Regent Homes says so on its own page: the community carries a Spring Hill mailing address and is incorporated within the City of Columbia. It's on my Columbia new construction page.
  • Quail Run Meadows, on Quail Run Way, has Spring Hill 37174 addresses and sits inside the City of Columbia. The geocoder matched 1800, 1817 and 1859 Quail Run Way that way, and the state's property records list the city as Columbia.

The Census ZIP map draws the Quail Run Meadows homes inside 38401, even though their mail is addressed to Spring Hill 37174, so treat the Census map as a guide and the mailing address as the post office's call.

Which zip codes are inside Columbia city limits?

Columbia's city limits use two street-delivery ZIP codes: 38401 for almost all of the city and Spring Hill's 37174 for some neighborhoods. On the 2020 Census map, about 33.08 of the city's 33.10 square miles were in 38401.

ZIP USPS city name Type Inside Columbia city limits? Example addresses

Which zip code is my neighborhood in?

Here's one address from each place, run through the Census geocoder on October 23, 2026, with the neighborhood name from the state's property records or the builder. A neighborhood can have streets I didn't check, so run your exact address before you rely on it.

Why does it matter which side of the city line a house is on?

The city limits, not the ZIP, decide whether a Columbia house pays city property tax, who supplies its power and sewer, and who handles its zoning and permits.

  • Property taxes: for 2026, a home inside Columbia city limits pays $1.9758 per $100 of assessed value, $1.369 to Maury County and $0.6068 to the City of Columbia. A home in unincorporated Maury County pays the county's $1.369 only. Tennessee assesses a home at 25 percent of its appraised value, so a $400,000 home pays about $1,976 a year inside the city and about $1,369 outside it.
  • Utilities: Columbia Power & Water Systems supplies power and water inside the city, and the City of Columbia runs the sewer. Parts of the county outside the city get power from Duck River Electric Membership Corporation, and a lot outside the city may be on septic. My Living in Columbia guide has the details.
  • Schools: all of Maury County, inside or outside the city, is one district, Maury County Public Schools. The district's 2026 to 2027 street list shows the zoned school for every street in the county.
  • Zoning and building permits come from the city inside its limits and from the county outside them.

Property tax figures are the county and city rates published for the year shown and are for planning only. Your actual bill depends on the assessed value, any exemptions and the city or district the home sits in. Confirm with the county assessor or trustee and your tax professional before you rely on a number.

How do I check the city limits and county for a Columbia address?

You can check any address with free public tools. This is the order I use.

  1. Run the address through the U.S. Census Bureau's geocoder at geocoding.geo.census.gov and use the geographies search. It names the county and the city. If no city comes back, the house is in an unincorporated area.
  2. Look up the parcel on the state's Tennessee Property Assessment Data site, TPAD, at assessment.cot.tn.gov. Pick Maury County and search the street. The parcel record lists the city, if there is one, and the subdivision.
  3. Find the school on the Maury County Public Schools street list for the 2026 to 2027 school year.
  4. Before you write an offer, ask for the last tax bill. It shows which taxes the house actually pays.
