What happened at the Battle of Spring Hill?
The Battle of Spring Hill was fought on November 29, 1864, the day before the Battle of Franklin. Confederate General John Bell Hood's army tried to get between Union General John M. Schofield's army and its supply line, and that night Schofield's command marched through Spring Hill from Columbia toward Franklin, per the City of Spring Hill. The city calls it "one of the most controversial non-fighting events of the entire war."
The next morning, Confederate officers met for breakfast at Rippa Villa to work out how the Union troops had slipped past, per The Land Trust for Tennessee. You can see that history in four places in Spring Hill:
- The Spring Hill Battlefield. The American Battlefield Trust and its members have saved more than 195 acres here, and the Trust's interpreted walking trail is southeast of town on Kedron Road and Reserve Boulevard.
- Rippa Villa. Tours run daily at 5700 Main Street; see the table above.
- White Hall. Built in 1844 for Dr. Aaron White on what's now Duplex Road, it was Confederate General Earl Van Dorn's headquarters in March 1863, and after the Battle of Franklin wounded soldiers were laid out in its front and back halls for treatment, per the Spring Hill Historic Commission. It joined the National Register in 1984. It's a private home, so you see it from the road.
- Ferguson Hall. Van Dorn moved his headquarters from White Hall to the Martin Cheairs house, now Ferguson Hall on the Tennessee Children's Home campus, and was killed by Dr. George Peters less than a week later, per the Historic Commission. Visit Columbia's Spring Hill page lists Ferguson Hall tours by appointment.

What's it like to have all of this close to home?
Spring Hill sits in two counties, and this list shows it: Harvey Park is on the Williamson County side, while Fischer Park, Rippa Villa and the library are in Maury County. If you're shopping homes here, the county line matters more than the park list, because it decides the school system and the county tax rate.
